The highlands of Lesotho are the
watershed for most of the large rivers flowing through South Africa. The Lesotho
Highlands Water Project is building a series of dams to
export water and hydro-electricity to South Africa. This massive Katse Dam from Mafika
Lisiu Pass and the flooded valleys goes on for 45 km. The dam wall which at 185
metres, is the highest in Africa.
The scenery is truly unbelievable and
the engineering expertise that was needed is mind-boggling. Truly one of the
great engineering projects of Africa.
When in the dam area try to use the dirt
roads which give you the closest access to the dam and the best viewing.
Do NOT miss a trip to the dam under any
circumstances.
Most Lesotho Lodges
are over-priced and in some cases, sub-standard - Visitors to the dam should stay at
Fouriesburg Country Inn rated highly on
Price & Service with plenty of good plain
food. Katse Lodge is also an good option depending on how long you have to
spend. We were not treated well at the Oxbow Lodge reception and offered a
double bed for two males - do they cater for perverts? Also, the price was very
high for below par rooms.

DRIVING: This can even
be handled by a car if due care is exercised - I would recommend 4x4 however
