We occasionally get the opportunity to carry out fence patrols in the Park in
areas not normally accessible to the general public. We thank the Park Management
for allowing us to do this for them.
The Pilanesberg National Park is
about 2 hours drive North-West of Johannesburg and is a "Big 5"
Reserve. Immaculate in every respect the North West Parks Board has developed the Park into
a Tourist Paradise - we cannot say more than recommend visiting the Park to all
who can get there.
We ask that you treat all the
animals, facilities, people and officials with the respect they deserve.
Remember, there are wild animals and they GET STRESSED by people trying to get
too close to them, making unnecessary noise and by speeding vehicles. The park
speed limit is 40km/h but we recommend slower driving at all times. This reduces
the spread of dust throughout the reserve leaving grasses near the roads
(viewing areas) more palatable for animals. Report
misbehaviour immediately to a Park Official. Do not litter, enter forbidden
areas, leave your vehicle or use your hooter unless there is some major
emergency. Report any dead or injured animal immediately.
Let these pictures, all taken in less
than 6 hours speak for
themselves.
Wildlife
Thanks to Operation Genesis
(1979) - still the largest game translocation undertaken in the world - the park
now has in excess of 7 000 animals including 24 of the larger species. This
abundance of wild life proliferate in 580 sq km of diverse and arresting bushveld
terrain. The park boasts healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white
rhino, elephant and buffalo - Africa's "Big Five". A wide variety of
rare and common species exist with endemic species like the nocturnal brown hyena, the fleet-footed cheetah, the majestic sable, as well as giraffe, zebra,
hippo and crocodile, to mention but a few.
